Do you have pain between your shoulder blades?
Recently I’ve been treating many women and men with pain between their shoulder blades. What causes this? Is it the hours we spend on our computers? Is it the time we spend working out at the gym? Is it our poor sleeping posture, or bad choice of pillow? Increasingly teenagers are presenting with this problem too. Is it our hunching over our phones and iPads? Pain between the shoulder blades and stiffness between the shoulder blades, tends to go hand in hand. It can lead to shoulder pain, reflux, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath. Often the area is so stiff the client is not aware just how sore it is until I start touching it. Every client I have treated for sleep disorders, presents with pain between the shoulder blades on manipulation. After the treatment they report they feel they can breathe again, and feel lighter in the head and neck. The area I’m referring to is of course the thoracic spine. The spinal nerves that supply the heart, stomach, lungs, and all the other organs in the chest, come out of the thoracic spine. In other words its a pretty important part of the body! If you were to lean back over your chair with your hands behind your head, what do you feel? Do you have pain between the shoulder blades or stiffness?
Does your lifestyle contribute to your pain?
In an ideal world, we would all be practising yoga every day, and squatting instead of sitting. But our lifestyle tends not to look like this. We would all sleep on our sides, instead of our stomachs. We would have better, more supportive pillows. We would take more breaks in our computer hours. We would not hunch over our phones and spend more time looking upwards! there are many simple daily stretches we can do to heal our thoracic spines!
