John came to see me on a recommendation from his sleep scientist about his insomnia, sleep apnoea and snoring. He had been recommended to use a CPAP machine, but refused. He wasn’t sleeping well and always felt tired. Being a tradie, he was up early during the week and then sleeping in on weekends. His sleep study showed severe sleep apnoea. John reported difficulty finding a girlfriend, as every girl left him as he often tossed and turned at night, never getting any quality sleep.
John was very young, 28, and had pain nearly everywhere in his body. He often found it hard to breathe through his nose. He would get home from work around 3.30 – 4pm, and was in the habit of going to bed for a nap, as he just couldn’t stay awake any longer. This caused problems, as he found it took hours to then get to sleep at night. He was also studying part time , on top of his full time job, and he needed to be studying after work, not napping.
My treatment included education about sleep hygiene, sleeping posture, relieving the tension in his whole spine , and a home exercise program. He was highly motivated to get on top of his sleep deprivation and made great changes in his life. After a few weeks he started seeing changes in his sleep patterns and his overall body pain reduced. He knew a life time of poor sleep would not resolve over night but he continues to make the changes I have recommended. He has started to feel less frustrated with his sleep patterns. He is breathing better through his nose. He feels as though he is getting control oner his sleep patterns. As a result he is drinking less.
In cases like John’s my job is to make sure they don’t fall asleep at the wheel, which is an all too current occurrence with someone in his position. if you know anyone similar, please refer them before an accident happens!
