Can you hurt your coccyx ?
Last night I was asked this very question. Can you hurt your coccyx? The answer is most definitely , yes. If, or when , you fall on your behind, the sacrum can be jammed and the coccyx can be displaced or even fractured. As the whole spine is connected and communicates from top to bottom, an injury can be serious. Any dislocation of the sacrum or coccyx causes an equal and opposite effect at the top of the spine.
The eyes must always be level.
The body aims to keep the eyes level at all times. Otherwise we would feel sea sick. So as well as giving yourself low back pain, a coccyx injury can cause headaches. You may of heard of people sitting on a doughnut cushion for coccyx injuries. So what, if any, treatment can cure a coccyx injury?
Craniosacral Therapy can help!
There are many techniques in Craniosacral therapy that can relieve the coccyx and sacrum injury. It is important to get treatment, or the body will just put the tension somewhere else. Then headaches can start months later with seemingly no explanation. Over the years I have seen many clients with jammed lower backs. Often I can trace it to skiing falls, horse riding falls or falling down concrete stairs! The sooner the treatment happens the better. Otherwise the compression in the spine becomes the norm.
Does it hurt to sit?
If you know anyone who complains of pain when sitting, recommend they come for treatment. Compression in the lower spine can affect men and women’s pelvic floor and/or cause pain in the low back. Lifting heavy weights at the gym will only compound the problem. Best to get treatment, then return to the gym. Running, cycling, lifting weights may worsen the compression in the coccyx and sacrum causing lifelong pain.
