Daniel’s wife heard that I treated snoring. She sent him along to get a better night’s sleep, for both of them. Daniel is young, in his 30’s, fit, and has a demanding job. He agreed to a sleep study, which revealed some very interesting information. Firstly, he had no idea he spent the whole sleeping night on his back. We learnt he was waking 46 times per hour. Also when his oxygen levels dropped his teeth were clenching at maximum levels. We also learnt he had extreme levels of involuntary leg movements. Also known as restless leg syndrome. His and her concern was the snoring. But I was more interested in the sleep study information to get the bigger picture. I wasn’t surprised by the teeth clenching and restless legs. Daniel’s body was extremely tight from head to toe. The body was trying to keep the airways open and discharge tension through the night. The sleep study showed he was getting very little sleep.
I treated Daniel with Craniosacral therapy, including inner mouth work. This helped him breathe better through his nose. I worked to reduce the tightness in his whole spine to relax the tension causing the restless legs. I prescribed weekly yoga classes to reduce his stress. I prescribed a device to prevent him rolling on to his back. He is slowly working to improve his diet and his extremely stressful work life. Daniel don’t want to use a mouth splint, or a breathing machine (CPAP), he wants to get to the cause of the problem and stop his snoring.
I recommend anyone concerned about their snoring or their fatigue levels to have a home sleep study. It is convenient, cost effective and gives such valuable information about sleep behaviour. We have no idea what goes on whilst we are asleep. The results from a sleep study can be quite enlightening!
